2005 - Present:  A Focus on the Future: the National Great River Park

Saint Paul leaders of the past decade dared to dream big and think boldly. Today, Saint Paul is positioned as a leader in riverfront revitalization. No longer the polluted back alley of the city, the Mississippi River is now the sparkling new image of our community.

It is time to start the newest phase of riverfront redevelopment with an updated vision that builds on the inspiring foundation seen today.  With the success of the past decade and the excitement and momentum created by the Grand Excursion 2004, Saint Paul is poised to become America’s gateway to the Mississippi River.

The following accomplishments were reached in 2005:

  • Hosted a Brown Bag Lunch presentation by Tom O'Neil, Dahlgren, Shardlow and Uban, on the condo boom that has hit the Twin Cities.  Check out livingontheriver.com for the numerous housing developments in Saint Paul.
  • Hosted a private reception at the Wells Fargo WinterSkate ice rink on Landmark Plaza to thank the numerous contributors to the park fundraising project.
  • Organized the April 17, 2005, Mayor's presentation on the future of Saint Paul's riverfront at Harriet Island.  Along with the Mayor's presentation, attendees could take a free Padelford boat ride or helicopter ride.
  • Organized a three-day workshop on the National Great River Park initiative that included a panel of international experts in city planning and a community small-group presentation period.
  • The 11th Annual Millard Fillmore Dinner, presented by Star Tribune, attracted nearly 1,400 people as attendees looked to the next phase of riverfront work in Saint Paul.
  • Held an event on Upper Landing highlighting the continued work on the riverfront and showcasing the new Upper Landing Park..
  • Conducted a survey on the National Great River Park.
  • Assembled a panel of national experts for a Community Forum on the Minnesota Centennial Showboat to share their thoughts on the National Great River Park and its four principles.

To date, the following accomplishments have been reached in 2006:

  • Four National Great River Park Reach Workshops were facilitated to give residents an opportunity to express what it means to be a regional asset of national significance, more urban, more natural and more connected.
  • Hosted a special presentation with Mayor Chris Coleman to speak about the last four months of work on the support and catch a first glimpse of the National Great River Park implementation plan.
  • Press Conference for National Great River Park the Monday of Fillmore Dinner.
