Greetings,
With Spring just around the corner, I wanted to share some of the great things happening on the river and in Saint Paul. |
|
Welcome, Superintendent Labovitz |
| We met recently with Minnesota's new National Park Service superintendent, Paul Labovitz. He is a dynamic leader who brings renewed enthusiasm to the ongoing revitalization of the Mississippi National River And Recreation Area, which includes our own 17-mile stretch of the Mississippi. Paul will be a tremendous asset to the community and the National Great River Park agenda, which will guide Saint Paul's development priorities on the river for the next decade and beyond. |
| Farmers Market Flats Open House |
| On March 13, Mayor Chris Coleman will welcome an exciting new development to Lowertown: The Farmers Market Flats. This unique development will add 15,000 square feet of indoor, year-round space to the beloved St. Paul Farmers Market, topped by 48 condos in a new five-story building at the corner of Wall and 5th Streets. Nearly four years in the making, the environmentally friendly Farmers Market Flats will incorporate renewable building materials throughout, garden plots on the roof, and energy-efficient heating and cooling through District Energy - a sustainable development that will bring added vitality to historic Lowertown. Join the Mayor for an Open House on March 13 at 4:30 p.m., at 289 E. 5th Street. |
| Sustainable Saint Paul |
| Speaking of sustainable development, Mayor Chris Coleman recently launched the Sustainable Saint Paul Award to recognize the outstanding environmental stewardship of individuals, businesses and organizations. He'll hold an inaugural awards ceremony at the April 18 City Council meeting. This is just one component of the Mayor's overall plan to make Saint Paul a leader in sustainable urban living and environmental protection. From signing the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement to establishing a joint green manufacturing initiative with our neighbors across the river, we applaud Mayor Coleman for his green, sustainable approach to city building. |
| Design Center Assists Ford and Xcel Redevelopments |
| Sustainable, green design will be one of the key principles we'll promote as our Design Center provides technical assistance to the Ford Plant Task Force and the Xcel Energy High Bridge Plant Decommissioning Task Force. Both redevelopment efforts provide Saint Paul opportunities to reclaim valuable former industrial sites along the river with the latest in green technologies and world-class urban design. With the Ford Plant in particular, Saint Paul is on its way to creating a completely new, state-of-the-art neighborhood - a rare opportunity for a built urban center. In providing technical support to both projects, we'll strive to balance the economic and community development needs of our growing metropolitan area with the needs of our historically significant and ecologically sensitive river valley.

In closing, there are two dates I'd like you to mark in your calendar. On May 10, our community's best and brightest will gather for the 13th Annual Millard Fillmore Dinner. I hope you'll join us for this yearly celebration of progress on the river and a look to the future for our great city. On April 22, a group of local artists will produce an arts-focused Earth Day celebration on Harriet Island called Wishes for the Sky, Promises to the Earth. See our event calendar on the right for more details.
See you on the river,
Patrick Seeb Executive Director Saint Paul Riverfront Corporation

Harriet Island
A thousand blue kites will fill the air and wind chimes will sound throughout the day on the banks of the Mississippi River. Local artists, along with environmental, arts and cultural organizations have teamed up to create a free, contemporary public art event inspired by the ancient Asian tradition of flying wishes on kites. All are welcome at this zero-waste, nature-inspired Earth Day Celebration.
