America’s River from Headwaters to Gulf
The Riverfront Corporation is an active member of the Mississippi River Network, a coalition of organizations located throughout the ten Mississippi River states working together to protect the land, water and people of the River. The Network recently launched a major nationwide campaign to help people re-connect with the Mississippi River and build a groundswell of citizen involvement to protect the river’s environment and heritage for future generations.
1Mississippi features a public education campaign to help people discover their connection to the river and the many ways we all depend on it, such as drinking water, transportation, recreation, vital habitat, and heritage. The campaign also raises awareness of threats to the river and promotes actions that can reduce pollution, protect habitat, and improve public enjoyment of the River system. A River Citizens program encourages individual stewardship, asking individuals to be “ambassadors” for the river in their communities.
Ten Things You Can Do for the Mississippi River:
- Become a River Citizen in your community by spreading the word to friends, neighbors and elected officials that the Mississippi River is important to you.
- Encourage your local community to take actions to protect the river (such as supporting wetlands protection, cleaning up old hazardous waste sites, restoring habitat).
- Volunteer at a River Clean-Up or a local conservation committees.
- Reduce yard chemicals to reduce chemical pollution and protect habitat.
- Buy organic produce to support sustainable farming practice.
- Respect storm sewers, making sure only rain goes down storm drains.
- Landscape with native plants and trees to support wildlife and natural systems of flood control.
- Support river access such as river trails, boat launches and parks.
- Support sound land management to prevent erosion.
- Get to know your river.
