Update on The Bridges of Saint Paul Project

July 20, 2007:  At a public hearing attended by nearly 100 people last night, the Zoning Committee of the Saint Paul Planning Commission reviewed JLT Group Inc.'s Planned Development rezoning request for The Bridges of Saint Paul project. The City of Saint Paul staff report presented at the hearing recommended denial of the rezoning request. Dozens of organizations, experts and individuals (including the U.S. Department of the Interior, the National Parks Service, the Friends of the Mississippi and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources), testified or sent letters in opposition to the rezoning. Following last night's meeting, the staff report will be forwarded on to the full Planning Commission without recommendation.  Click here for a report from Star Tribune journalist Myron P. Medcalf.

As an advocate for riverfront revitalization, the Saint Paul Riverfront Corporation would like nothing more than to see a vibrant, mixed-used development on the West Side that brings more jobs, retail, housing, dining and entertainment to the river’s edge. The proposed The Bridges of Saint Paul project certainly offers these amenities, but in a way we feel is inappropriate for the river valley – an opinion we expressed in October 2006 when JLT Group, Inc. submitted its first rezoning request. The Bridges project, re-submitted now as a Planned Development, has not changed substantially, nor has our opinion of it. We believe this is the wrong project for this site on the river.
